Chapter 16
She had no dreams that night. The room was filled with daylight when she woke up. As she stared at the ceiling, yesterdayâs events slowly came back to her. She stretched out her hand but found an empty space beside her. The sheet was still warm.
She sat up. âDavid?â she called. No one answered. Maybe he had gone out for a walk? After all, he liked the outdoors. She lay down again, covering her naked body with the comforter. David had watched over her last night, as he had promised. Without any need to worry, she slept deeply. She recalled waking up only once⦠A smile crossed her face. Half asleep, their bodies had found one anotherâhesitant at first. But shielded by the darkness, intimacy was easy, and passion took over.
The memories of their fighting over the past few days had faded a little now. They would be better for it, Sara thought. But a voice inside her head spoke up. In the face of her bliss, it warned her that there was more she needed to tell David. She argued with it. It could wait. Waiting was perfectly reasonable. There was no rush. But the voice protested.
The apartment door opened. âDavid?â she called again, silencing her inner dialogue.
âHey, youâre awake.â He walked into the bedroom with two large coffees. âI come bearing gifts.â He grinned. âI know how you are without caffeine, soâ¦â
âOh, wonderful! Youâre the best.â
âI know. Thatâs what you told me last night.â He handed her one of the coffee cups and snuggled up beside her.
âDid I? I honestly donât remember.â
âLiar.â He kissed her. âDoes that ring a bell?â
âVaguely.â
âI see. You must need more kisses.â
She giggled. âI didnât know you could read my mind.â
âI can, as a matter of fact,â he mumbled, kissing her neck. âYour mind is telling me all sorts of interesting things.â
âReally? Like what?â
âI think it just told me Iâm wearing too much clothing.â
âI doubt that. My mind was raised properly. Besides, it smells coffee.â
âThat coffee is far too hot. It can wait, trust meâ¦â
When she finally got to her coffee, it was cold. Lying in Davidâs arms, her body still simmering, Sara smiled. This wasnât the worst way to spend her last days in San Francisco.
âWhat do you want to do today?â Davidâs voice interrupted her thoughts.
âI donât know. We could go out. I could show you the city. Visit a museum?â
âIâd rather be outside. But seeing some of the city would be fun. Iâd like to see the Golden Gate Bridge at least. I do need to leave tomorrow. Maybe we can drive back together? Take turns? That way you donât have to drive alone.â
âOh. Right. That would be nice, not to drive alone.â
âYou sure? You donât sound excited.â
âIâIâd just hoped we could stay a few days longer. But if you need to get back, you need to get back. No big deal.â
âOkay then. Weâll pack up the last of your things this afternoonâthat should go fast. What will you do with the bed?â
âIâll see if they can pick it up in the morning.
